Hastelloy B4 is a nickel-based alloy of nickel, molybdenum, manganese and other elements. This gives it corrosion and oxidation resistance while still readily machinable for engineers. Hastelloy B4 round bar is most prominently used to make long round bar stock perfect for applications needing high strength, fabricability and chemical resistance, even in extreme environments up to 1,650 degrees F. Compared to stainless steel, the nickel and molybdenum content in ASTM Hastelloy B4 allows better yield strength and resistance to pitting and cracking when exposed to many acids, bleaches or chlorides.
It retains structural stability and workability in both extremely high and cryogenic temperatures. This versatility makes the UNS N10629 square bar useful for parts used in the chemical processing, petrochemical, pollution control, nuclear, and thermal power industries, where temperatures and environments fluctuate greatly. It is also used to manufacture aircraft exhaust systems and furnace components.
The typical properties of Hastelloy B4 include a density of 8.43 grams per cubic centimetre, tensile strength range of 100 ksi, yield strength of 30 to 35 ksi, and moderate elongation of 15%. Its thermal coefficient closely matches quartz, glass and ceramic materials, minimizing mechanical stresses in assemblies.
The versatility of this nickel alloy allows engineers to use it in their designs, particularly for long-term structural integrity. Hastelloy parts like tubes, fasteners and custom fabrications are readily made from the B4 grade round bars.
Proper technique must be followed when machining Hastelloy B4 round bars, as the gummy chips can quickly lead to tool wear. Slow SFM speed, abundant coolant and sharp edges are key to good surface finishes and tolerances.
Standard machining processes of turning, drilling and milling work well on ASME SB Hastelloy B4 black bar due to its combination of hardness and ductility. EDM may also be used for intricate electrical discharge machining of shapes.
