Inconel 718 round bar is a “superalloy” for a reason – it maintains great strength even close to its 1,300°F melting point. Its nickel, chromium, and niobium composition gives 718 stability despite scorching temperatures hot enough to melt aluminium many times over. It takes a lot to wear down parts made from this high-performance material.
Major industries relying on Inconel 718 bright bar, plate and fasteners include aerospace, natural gas production, nuclear energy, and chemical processing. Blades, combustion cans, shafts and containment vessels utilise 718’s lasting quality, whereas alternatives can only stand for a short time.
Properties like corrosion and crack resistance are vital for equipment safety and reliability.
In jet engines, for example, AMS 5663 Inconel 718 Hex Bar turbine rotors spin furiously for years despite contact with 1000+°F combustion gas blasting past at near sonic speeds. Chemical plant reactors depend on it, containing highly acidic compounds like phosphoric acid despite exposure to damaging heat, pressure, and corrosion over long periods.
Chromium, niobium, molybdenum and trace elements like aluminium and titanium are carefully balanced to enhance properties. This UNS N07718 Half Round Bar composition forms a nickel matrix full of strengthening precipitate particles, giving 718 its muscular but flexible properties. It works great under fire – resisting wear, fatigue cracks, oxidation decay and the effects of ageing remarkably well compared to alternatives.
Machining does require rigid setups and gradual cuts with specialized tools due to 718’s tendency to work hardened fast. But with deliberate care and maintenance, components with fine dimensional tolerance and smooth surface finish work for a long time. Despite its higher cost, the material has exceptional performance, making it the first for critical duty hardware despite higher cost.
