Waspaloy is an iron-nickel-chromium alloy that is known for its high strength and resilience, making it a popular choice for plates used in demanding applications. This metal product offers a versatile mix of characteristics that enable it to withstand extreme environments.
In addition to fighting corrosion, Waspaloy exhibits good high-temperature strength. It retains its hardened properties even when continuously exposed to elevated temperatures up to around 1000°F. The gamma prime phase in the microstructure contributes to this capability. AMS 5544 Waspaloy Foil Sheet can be suitable for aviation, aerospace, and power generation uses where heat resistance is necessary.
The alloy also provides good ductility and fracture toughness at typical working temperatures. AMS 5544 Waspaloy Rolls can withstand vibration and cyclic stress without cracking or deformation. Components can be formed or fabricated without becoming too brittle. The nickel content lends ductility while elements like aluminium improve toughness.
Waspaloy’s properties can be optimised through proper heat treatment methods. Solution annealing followed by age hardening allows the metallic crystals to precipitate in ways that enhance strength. Preheating before welding helps minimise cracks. The heat treatment process can be tailored to the desired characteristics and application.
The above traits make Waspaloy a common choice when both high strength and corrosion resistance are needed. It exceeds the capabilities of austenitic or ferritic stainless steels. UNS N07001 CR Sheet combination of hardness, creep resistance, ductility, and fatigue strength set it apart from other alloys.
This alloy can be used across a wide temperature range while maintaining good mechanical properties. UNS N07001 Plate retains robustness whether operating at -423°F or almost 2000°F. It outperforms steels in this versatility. Only certain superalloys like Inconel are suitable for more extreme temperatures.
Waspaloy’s density sits around 0.296 lb/in3 in the annealed condition. This is comparable or slightly lower than austenitic stainless steels. The reasonable density contributes to lower component weight in some applications. Lighter parts can benefit designs in industries like aerospace where reduced mass offers advantages.
