17-4 PH Plate is a form of stainless steel used extensively in applications requiring high strength, good corrosion resistance and ease of fabrication.
What gives ASTM A240 17-4 PH Sheets its versatility and unique combination of strength, toughness and corrosion resistance is the precipitation hardening process. Solution annealing renders a single-phase solid solution microstructure. Upon rapid cooling and reheating, copper-rich precipitates form inside the crystalline matrix.
Precipitation hardening refines the microstructure through heat exposure to optimize mechanical attributes. The precipitation distribution, size and number density directly correlate with resulting proof strength. Parts can be custom-tailored with precipitation hardening to achieve H900, H1100, H1025 and H1150 hardness levels based on end-use requirements.
The chromium and nickel in UNS S17400 Plain Sheet provide superior resistance to chemical attack from freshwater, acids, alkalis, various petroleum products and organic materials across temperatures up to 800°F (427°C). The alloy withstands oxidation and scaling up to 1,500°F (815°C) but loses its anti-wear qualities beyond this threshold. Passivating and electropolishing after machining enhance corrosion protection.
With susceptibility to polythionic and sulfuric acids as well as halide pitting in certain conditions, UNS S17400 Ring may not suit highly caustic chemical processing applications. However, the material generally displays better overall corrosion behavior than the widely-used 316L grade of stainless steel.
ASME SA240 17-4 PH Chequered Plate offers excellent fabrication attributes using all conventional techniques associated with stainless steels. It machines cleanly without fusion welding or heavy cutting oil. Tool pressure should remain low to prevent work hardening effects. Cold working before precipitation hardening is possible without fracturing or cracking.
The alloy plates can undergo forming, tube bending, welding and attachment fastening much like standard austenitic grades. Annealing typically follows cold work. Parts should get stress relief after welding to restore corrosion resistance and toughness. Common finishing techniques produce quality surfaces.
