ASTM A453 Grade 660 Class A round bar is an alloy steel round bar with high strength and toughness. It contains nickel, chromium and molybdenum as strengthening agents. The “660” refers to its minimum tensile strength of 66,000 psi.
This steel round bar product meets the Class A requirements for improved toughness and weldability. It achieves higher strength than regular carbon steel while maintaining good impact resistance. Adding alloying elements like nickel also improves its resistance to high temperatures.
Some key properties and uses:
- Very high strength and hardness for its low carbon content. Minimum yield strength of 60,000 psi. It can substitute for medium carbon steel.
- Good ductility and impact toughness at room temperature. Less brittle than higher carbon steels.
- Resists fracture from repeated loading and shocks. Suitable for parts with fluctuating stresses.
- Weldable using common procedures. Does not require special measures.
- Offers better high-temperature strength than lower alloys. Handles temperatures up to 1000°F.
The combination of strength, toughness and weldability make ASTM A453 Grade 660 Specification is useful for mobile equipment, crane and hoist components, mining machinery, presses, compaction equipment and other demanding applications. The alloying elements boost its strength and durability over regular carbon steel grades.
It resists cracking and fracture, which is important for parts undergoing variable loading, vibration and shock impacts. The corrosion resistance provides reliability across industrial settings and weather exposures. At the same time, it retains enough ductility and toughness for good formability and impact resistance. Parts resist cracking during forming and service. The balance of properties allows large, rigid components to be fabricated without becoming too brittle or susceptible to fractures.
The weldable nature permits the joining of thick sections. Parts can be welded using common procedures without special measures that drive up costs.
